Why Indian govt wants smartphone makers to pre-install an app on all devices

In a move to boost India’s cybersecurity, the telecom ministry has told smartphone companies to pre-install a government-developed ‘Sanchar Saathi’ app on every new device and also roll out a software update to add the app on existing devices. The mandate had triggered strong pushback from Opposition leaders, who say the move could open the door to state surveillance.
